מתנה טובה יש לי בבית גנזי ושבת שמה, ואני מבקש ליתנה לישראל
זה האות אשר שם קל בינו ובין בני ישראל
Hashem told Moshe, "Matanah tovah yeish li be'veis genazai ve'Shabbos shemah va'ani mevakeish litnah le'Yisrael — I have a good present in my storehouse and I want to give it to Bnei Yisrael" (Shabbos 10b). Furthermore, we sing in the zemiros of Leil Shabbos (Yom Shabbos Kodesh Hu), "Zeh ha'os asher sam Keil beino u'vein Bnei Yisrael — This is the sign that Hashem placed between Him and Bnei Yisrael."
Shabbos is not only a gift, but also a sign of our loyalty. The Chofetz Chaim explains that since Shabbos is a personal gift from the Al-mighty to the Jewish people, we must be sure to accept the gift graciously. Imagine a chassan presenting his kallah with a most exquisite necklace of freshwater pearls. However, instead of thanking him profusely, the kallah rejects the gift. The pain and insult would be staggering. The shidduch would be off.
Hashem created millions of stars, and each one is much larger than the earth; thus, if He classifies Shabbos as a matanah tovah, which He keeps in His special storehouse, that is an indication of just how precious Shabbos is. And He has chosen to give it to us!
With the proper preparation and frame of mind, one can sense the holiness of Olam HaBa within the sanctity of Shabbos, and appreciate the gift for what it is.
