אל תשליכני לעת זקנה ככלות כחי אל תעזבני

All too often, we take for granted the goodness that surrounds us. The parents who raised us. The family that surrounds us with love. The associates and friends who give freely from their time. The health Hashem has granted us.
The pasuk in Eikev says, "Ve’zacharta es Hashem Elokecha ki Hu hanosein lecha koach laasos chayil — Then you shall remember Hashem, your G-d; that it was He Who gave you the strength to make wealth” (Devarim 8:18).
One summer, one of the counselors at Telshe’s Camp Kol Torah high school program asked Rav Mordechai Gifter, rosh yeshivah of Yeshivas Telshe in Cleveland, a question on the Gemara he was learning. Rav Gifter, who was already elderly and not as sharp as he had once been, looked at him and shared with him something memorable. “I’m so sorry. But I can’t help you.” The boy was shocked. He did not know that Rav Gifter was not well. But then Rav Gifter continued to explain, “You see, by the time I reach the bottom of the page, I can’t remember what was written at the top of it."
Pity must have shown on the young man’s face, but Rav Gifter told him one of the most treasured lessons he would ever learn. “I want you to know I am not sad or depressed. I am malei simchah, full of joy. Veil dos vill di Ribbono Shel Olam fun mir — Because this is what the Al-mighty wants from me.”
It is true that Dovid HaMelech pleads (Tehillim 71:9), "Al tashlicheini le'eis ziknah kichlos kochi al taazveini — Do not cast me off in time of old age; when my strength fails, forsake me not."
But we would all be wise to learn to accept Hashem's will in all circumstances, and to be grateful for all He has done and continues to do for us.
