Yaakov 'Yanky' Lemmer sings Habeit Mishomayim in Yiddish – יעקב למר הבט משמים

Shared on August 30, 2022
Habeit Mishamayim is a medley of a classic Yiddish song by Samuel Gozinsky and a cantorial recitative by Mosh Ganchoff, created by Yanky Lemmer and Jeremiah Lockwood, and arranged for string quartet by Jeremiah Lockwood. This arrangement was specially composed for performance at the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, and debuted on June 30, 2022. This performance featured collaboration between Brooklyn-based cantors, and the Polish Airis String Quartet.
The text is a plaintive cry to the Almighty, that he look down from heaven on his children's suffering. The prayer adds that the fact that we still call His name, despite the suffering, should invoke His mercy upon us.
Yanky Lemmer is one of three cantors at this concert (alongside Shimmy Miller and Yoel Kohn) who were featured on the recently released album Golden Ages: Brooklyn Chassidic Cantorial Revival Today, produced by Jeremiah Lockwood. The Golden Ages album project was supported through the generous funding of the Taube Center for Jewish Studies at Stanford University.
