The Sfas Emes says that one of the terms for the Jewish nation is Am Yisorel. The root of the word Am is the the same as the word Omamot- to smolder. The nature of Am yisroel is at times we may appear to be a cold, and lifeless like an old coal in the fire. But when we have the right motivation, wind or heat suddenly we flare up. The fire, the the song is referring to is the Aish pnimi, the fire inside. Sometimes it appears that it’s gone out, but it’s always there, it just needs the right fuel to get it going
