Corona Weddings - For my Wedding - Cover - Israel Portnoy
I heard this song first through Don Henley.
It was written by Larry John Mcnally.
A very non-standard wedding song, feat. some very non-standard weddings (All footage/photos are from the last month).
Corona has dealt each of us our own personal challenges throughout these last few weeks (wait, months?! how long has it been again?)
Anyone who has been married or been in anyway involved in the planning of a wedding, can empathise with that overwhelming feeling brought on by hours upon hours of meticulous planning that goes into the big day-the emotional rollercoaster that is the lead-up to your dream day.
For many young couples, Corona shattered these plans as they were forced to get married with just a handful of people and forgo a lifetimeโ€™s worth of romantic dreams. Imagine telling your grandparents that they canโ€™t be at your wedding after they have literally waited their entire life to be there. Imagine having to tell 300 friends and family members that itโ€™s not happening. Imagine the stress involved and the thousands of factors involved in deciding if to go through with it or if to postpone it.
The truth is I didnโ€™t think about it until I got a call last week (less than 24 hours before) asking me to sing at a wedding ceremony with Mendy Portnoy (Yes that was a pretty regular job once upon a time PCE (Pre Corona Era). This wasnโ€™t like any wedding we had been to before though, (and we've been to a few). We played our instruments wearing rubber gloves. There was a bride/groom, their parents and about 10 family members, all of us gathered in an open field for an intimate ceremony. And then everyone just went home.
And then it hit me. I had been so caught up in my personal Corona worries (not being able to perform gigs etc) that I hadnโ€™t deeply thought about these couples who had to start out their married lives in such an unimaginably bittersweet way.
Iโ€™ve loved this song for a while now and despite having never performed it at a wedding, it feels like there couldnโ€™t be a more appropriate wedding song right now.
So I decided to record it and dedicate it to all these incredible couples and so many more who put love first, despite the challenging circumstances brought about by Corona. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you (from Australia to NYC to Bnei Barak & beyond) for sending in these beautiful photos/videos that you have shared with me, enabling us to all share in your love and your message that love wins in the face of Corona.
As Passover arrives, traditionally in Judaism this marks the close of the Jewish wedding season, as the โ€œSefirat Ha-omerโ€ forbids wedding/celebration for 49 days until after Shavuot. What a close it has been.
Chag Sameach! May we all be blessed with health and may those who need a healing receive one speedily.
Love wins.
